JAPAN HOUSE LOS ANGELES
ART X INNOVATION: CONNECTING THE FUTURE
Recognized worldwide as a leader in innovation, Japan has fostered an environment where advances in technology and creativity flourish. The creative experiments featured in Japan House Los Angeles’ inaugural season span fashion, design, art, architecture, media arts and robotics reflecting careful attention to detail, precision, delicacy and unbounded imagination. Through gallery exhibitions and public programs, Japan House will showcase creators using art and innovation to make work that alters our perception of the present and presages the future.
EXHIBITION
ANREALAGE | A LIGHT UN LIGHT
For the inaugural Japan House Los Angeles exhibition, we introduce works from the fashion label ANREALAGE and designer Kunihiko Morinaga, one of a vanguard of next generation Japanese innovators. Morinaga engages mindful observation, attention to detail, and advanced technologies, to create strikingly high concept collections that awaken awareness of the extraordinary within the everyday. The exhibition, A LIGHT UN LIGHT, features ANREALAGE designs on the theme of light, inviting new ways of seeing and integrating materials and techniques from illusions of light and perspective to photosensitive fabrics. Inspired by the experience of daily life in Japan today, these experiments shift how we see, wear and think about the clothing of tomorrow.
The Japan House Los Angeles organized exhibition A LIGHT UN LIGHT draws upon an exhibition presented by Ikebukuro PARCO in Tokyo in November 2017.
About Kunihiko Morinaga
Born in Tokyo in 1980, Kunihiko Morinaga graduated from Waseda University and the Vantan Design Institute. In 2006, ANREALAGE presented its first full collection show 150m above the ground in the observatory of the iconic Tokyo Tower. Five years later Morinaga was poised to receive Japan’s 29th Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix for the best new designer. His first solo exhibition, A Real Un Real Age, was held at Parco Museum (Tokyo, 2012) and was followed by Philosophical Fashion 2: A Color Un Color" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (Ishikawa, 2013).
Morinaga debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 2014 with his ANREALAGE 2015 S/S collection, entitled SHADOW. Vogue’s Angelo Faccavento presented this observation regarding Morinaga’s first Paris collection, "From the stark setup to the almost martial rhythm of the show, as well as the inventiveness and dense experimentation of the clothes, it felt like a genuinely Japanese fashion experience. For a debut, the collection looked accomplished and even surprising."
