ULI Los Angeles in celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, together with JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, presents an inaugural moderated panel focused on the Visibility of Asians in Commercial Real Estate (CRE). Our featured speakers are esteemed Asian CRE trailblazers who represent notable institutional investment managers and are involved with ULI at the Global and Americas levels.

Please join us to learn about the speakers’ heritage, career journeys, and perspectives on social impact with respect to investments and hiring. There will also be discussions addressing important topics Asians face within our industry.

Goodwin Gaw
Chairman and Managing Principal, Gaw Capital Partners

Goodwin is the Founder and Managing Principal of Gaw Capital Partners, a uniquely positioned real estate private equity fund management company that focuses on markets in Greater China and other high barrier to entry markets globally.

Gaw Capital has raised six commingled funds targeting the Greater China and APAC regions since 2005. The firm also manages value-add/opportunistic funds in Vietnam and the US, a Pan-Asia hospitality fund, a European hospitality fund and provides services for separate account direct investments globally. Gaw Capital Partners has raised equity in excess of USD$18.5 billion as of 2021 Q3 and currently commands assets of over USD$32.6 billion under management encompassing residential developments, retails centers, hotels, commercial, IDC and logistic properties.

Goodwin has over 20 years of real estate investment and management experience in the United States and Asia. He founded Downtown Properties in 1996 and serves as Managing Principal. He’s especially interested in re-positioning distressed heritage properties. These include the renovation of the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and conversion of over 456,000 square feet of empty historical buildings into hip residential lofts in downtown Los Angeles including the acclaimed Douglas Building. He also served as Vice Chairman of Pioneer Global Group.

Goodwin received a BS in Civil Engineering from the School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, a BS in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a MS in Construction Management from Stanford University.

Lily Kao
Managing Director, AEW Capital Management, L.P.

Lily Kao is a Managing Director at AEW and Senior Portfolio Manager for AEW's $10B+ U.S. open-end, core strategy. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the fund’s investments, operations and working closely with investor relations on marketing and providing support to the Fund’s investors.

She also Co-Heads AEW’s Los Angeles office where she is responsible for overseeing a team of approximately 40 professionals responsible for the management of a $12 billion West Coast portfolio. Ms. Kao has been with the firm since 1998 and is an active member of AEW’s ESG+R Committee, AEW’s DE&I Committee, and ULI’s IOPC Green. Ms. Kao holds a B.S. in business administration from the University of Southern California.

Robert Jue
CEO and Co-Founder, Standard Real Estate Investements

Robert Jue is a Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Real Estate Investments (“Standard”). Standard is a minority-owned and controlled real estate private equity firm that manages capital on behalf of institutions and allocates joint venture equity to developers.

It operates nationally, across property sectors and risk profiles, with an initial focus on development of market-rate attainable housing, and a commitment to improve access to capital for minority and women developers. Prior to co-founding Standard, Mr. Jue spent 14 years at CBRE Investment Management (“CBRE”) where he most recently served as a Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager of the CBRE U.S. Development Partners Fund Series, as well as Head of Development for the Americas. He was actively involved in several initiatives at CBRE, as a member of the Americas Leadership Board and Co-Chair of the Americas ESG Committee.

In addition to his experience at CBRE, Mr. Jue was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of Wood Partners, a national multifamily development company. Outside of work, he is an adventure sports enthusiast. Mr. Jue received a BA in Economics from UCLA.
